A Birthday Present

My kids gave me this small book, called BLANKET, by Kara Thompson. I never really thought of a blanket this way- in a way that someone will write a book - about a blanket. In a way that such an object has such a profound meaning. But thinking about it, a blanket is the first thing that will wrap a baby to provide some warm and comfort. And it might be the object covering our dead body at the end. Thompson writes that: "To unfold a blanket, to prepare for cover, is to anticipate a feeling: perhaps most commonly, of warmth, security, or rest. To unfold a blanket is to bask in grief, or to feel absence. To reveal and disclose, or to develop and progress. Unfolding is not an undoing, but an intimate exchange. What it covers is that which is most exposed."
